These mobile little things

Following on from littlethings’ rant about mobiles:

What’s cracking me up is the poeple walking around like they’re Jordi from Star Trek. Spending £50+ on ‘must-have’ gadgets as extensions to their already overcrowded wardrobes.

I’m a techy, but i refuse to upgrade my phone anymore, until something decent/useful like VOIP comes out. £200+ for a phone (plus calls) per year is a hefty chunk of change, for something with a such a short compatibility/desirability lifecycle. I’ll stick with voice calls and sms - all the other stuff is for people for whom a Nokia 65-Gagillion is the pinacle of their technological toolkit. People need to realise, that until the back-end (telecoms companies) upgrade, any new front-ends (phones) are simply superfluous eye candy.

Skype Me

I’m loving this program. Skype is a free, peer-to-peer VOIP program, that offers end-to-end encryption with extremely good quality. Meaning that it just works! Although it’s from the makers of the infamous Kazaa, Skype has zero spyware/adware making it a must-have, or must-try at the very least.

One useful function is the SkypeMe! status setting (which is an addition to the usual IM statuses). This allows anybody to call through and say ‘Hi!’. So far i’ve spoken to a vain Israeli, helpful Scouser and soft-spoken Indian.

Install it, and give me a call - you can find the SkypeMe! link over on the left. If i don’t answer, i’m out, ignoring you or hiding behind the sofa scared that i have an internet stalker…

New tech stuff

Have a look at these goodies. My favourite is the SkyCar…and at 20miles per gallon, and a top speed of 365mph…it actually sounds quite tasty!

Rise of the Nations

Great game, meant to be even better than my beloved Age of Empires II.

I Believe In a Thing Called Love by The Darkness

This is one of my favourite songs of the year to date. It’s like a mixture of a reincarnated Freddie Mercury, 1983-1988 and Beatles’-like drumming in a glam rock package, resulting in great music.

From what i have heard so far “Permission to Land” will be the first album i’ve bought in a long time. Or someone else can buy it for me if they are feeling generous.
