Gattaca [ ***** ]

Jude Law and Ethan Hawke shine as this futuristic vision, intermingled with an inspirational and motivating story, blends magnificently to create one of the most perfect films i have watched. Every shot, piece of musical soundtrack and spoken word left me thrilled at the artistic quality. The storyline itself is enlighteningly debate-worthy.

He had my vote

Christian Bale has been casted as the new Batman. Great selection! The director Chistopher Nolan expands, saying:

What I see in Christian is the ultimate embodiment of Bruce Wayne. He has exactly the balance of darkness and light that we were looking for.

Extremely well put. There’lll finally be a caped crusader with a dark-side to match Michael Keaton.

I think i’m so supportive of Bale because someone said i reminded them of Patrick Bateman in American Psycho. Suffice to say, that was the last thing they ever said…I just turned up my Phil Collins and started hacking…

Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines [ ***1/2- ]

The third (and final?) installment of Arnie’s Terminator suprised me in it’s effectiveness. By breaking up the action with comedic self-awareness, T3 has again pushed the boundaries of SFX while keeping the excellent (if now familiar) storyline; Even if only for some of the ingenuity used to display the stunning Kristanna Loken as the murderous T-X cyborg. Pleasingly the action wasn’t forcibly extended, keeping the running time to a plain, vanilla 1 1/2hrs.

Copenhagen

Lat night i was pleasingly suprised by the quality of weekend TV. For the first time in a while:

[Copenhagen is an] adaptation of Michael Frayn’s award-winning drama, based on a pivotal meeting in 1941 between physicists Niels Bohr and Werner Heisenberg, whose work together had paved the way for the building of the atomic bomb but who now found themselves on opposite sides in the war.

Very interesting both artistically and historically. Two of the smartest minds the world had to offer are depicted, discussing and debating, excellently; explaining the development of the atom bomb, whilst showing from a slightly less biased angle, how close Germany came to possessing THE wmd. Also it explains the Heisenberg Principle and the thought processes used to discover it. My only disappointment is missing the first half.

Confessions of a Dangerous Mind [ ***1/2- ]

George Clooney’s directorial debut, shines not so much due to his sometimes overelaborate shots, but to the interesting storyline. Purported to be a true story by, The Dating Game and The Gong Show TV legend Chuck Barry. Sam Rockwell’s eccentric behaviour makes for enjoyable viewing, while Julia Roberts, Drew Barrymore and George Clooney support entertainingly.

Hulk [ *—- ]

Forget for a moment that they have made a hash of the original story. Forget for a moment that the opening act is far too slow. This is still the worst, most boring disappointment of a film i have forced myself to see, for a long time. I eventually only watched it because my 9-year-old nephew insisted, and even he found it boring.

25th Hour [ ****1/2 ]

Edward Norton shines in this Spike Lee joint about a man on his last day before a 7-year jail term. Outstanding cinematography and an intoxicating soundtrack, intertwine with the interesting storyline. Creating a funny, realistic, emotional but never over-sentimental, ‘must see’ movie.

Dysfunktional Family [ ****- ]

Eddie Griffin is on top-form in this biographical stand-up routine. Had me gasping for breath at times. Nice to have a fresh take on black comedy other than the obvious ‘black-white’ jokes.

Don’t you just hate it when this happens?

Last night/early this morning I was (still) configuring my new MT blog. A C4 film going on the background didn’t capture me at first, as it was obviously of the calibre that went straight to video.
In between rebuilds however I caught snippets of a strange dialog. I realised that the two main characters, although visually in a room together, were only corresponding through letters. Unfortunately the strange dialog clouded the excellent idea.

Love Letters (1998)

If you have seen the live stage play, the movie version has no resemblance to it whatsoever in terms of overall concept, other than the basic plot. The stage play, or reading might be a better description, forces the audience to listen, and use their imagination. It is a unique and fascinating production. If you liked the movie, there is no guarantee that the stage version would be your cup of tea.

It always ends up this way. In certain ways it would have better if I hadn’t seen it. As Kazaa most likely won’t host it, and I doubt its short-term return to TV. As I type this, I remember my unfortunate jaunt with Hav Plenty. Which, when it was finally repeated on TV, I was watching nonsense on a different channel…
